Hussard de la Mort Benoit leaned back in his saddle, took a long draw on his pipe and surveyed the scene in front of him. There were two troopers from his regiment walking down the main street of the small town in which his regiment was billeted. They didn’t so much walk as parade, but not parade like troops on the barrack square but like young aristos in the squares of Paris showing off their new outfits. But then again most of his squadron had joined up, not due to some great idea of liberty and an end of tyranny, but because the all-black uniform and scull emblems were irresistible to women! His horse shook its head as if sharing the sense of disgust and Benoit pondered on the fact that only he and the Marechal-des-logis had seen any service. Well it would all be very different when the cannon beat out their rhythm and the musket balls flew amongst them, then they would find out if they deserved to serve under the colours of the Hussards de la Mort.

Large flakes of moist snow, blown on a chill wind, speckled the font of his breastplate as he reached the top of the rising ground and surveyed the valley below. Yet beneath his sallet his hair was matted with sweat, which ran down his neck into the small of his back, making him shiver involuntarily. It had been a fair march from their camp towards the village of Towton and he was glad of a rest, leaning against his billhook, as he drew in great gulps of the cold air. As his mind wondered he looked forward to when the day’s work was done and he could return to camp and rest. Little did he know that the day ahead would see him immersed in the bloodiest battle ever fought on English soil and few of his comrades would see the glow of the camp fire again.

A scream echoed through the woods. Rather than fading away it seemed to be amplified by the trees, resonating through the undergrowth until it saturated the air with fear. A girl in a white shift, her wide eyes staring wildly ahead, appeared at the edge of a small clearing. She was breathing heavily each gasp of air hurt her lungs, if she could just make it to the entrance of the cave she would be safe. She ran across the clearing, brambles grabbing at her alabaster ankles, flecking droplets of blood on her feet, not far now. Something made her look back and there it was, it’s immense bulk forcing its way through the trees as if they were saplings. Horns glinting in the sunlight that pierced the canopy, eyes burning with malevolence, the Minotaur had arrived.

As the dust blew around his ankles and the Iberian sun beat down on his ruddy face the sergeant of an Essex regiment muttered into his upturned shako. This figure is a tribute to great story telling and wonderful acting.
